..../back Unlike many of the artists who have been captivated by the moody and evocative mountain landscapes of Scotland, Topsy focused primarily on the detail of those landscapes: the eccentricities of rock and water and wood Often reminiscent of the illustrator, Arthur Rackham, her isolation of dramatic fragments of the environment leads the observer to an intensified appreciation of vistas that are already rich in drama and mythology. In 1982 Topsy moved from Oban to London and started painting a series of interiors, still lifes and nudes. This resulted in a collection of extremely decorative works which focused on the use of colour and design to create glowing interiors with, again, the evocative use of fantasy elements that suggested the more mysterious interiors of the psyche. In 1984 she had a successful exhibition at The Ice House in Holland Park, London and has continued to exhibit at a number of restaurants and galleries in the city. In 1989 Topsy started painting on plaster tiles and panels, developing the style she is becoming increasing well known for. Her present work includes a range of purely ornamental smaller pieces using designs which focus on fruit, flowers and fish to large plaster wall panels which concentrate on the poetic nature of feminine beauty. For those that are familiar with Topsy’s earlier work her latest pieces can be seen to combine the delicacy of her Scottish landscapes with the decorativeness of her later interiors and continue to express a strong interest in the magical and mythical.
